The aim of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is to obtain diagnostic information about a pregnancy. Currently, diagnosis of genetic conditions (e.g. Down Syndrome) during pregnancy is performed using invasive procedures, such as amniocentesis or CVS, which carry a slight risk for miscarriage. In the 1990's, researchers discovered fetal DNA within the circulation of pregnant women which offered a promise of someday using a simple blood draw to diagnose genetic conditions and chromosome disorders during a pregnancy.
At South Florida Perinatal Medicine we offer several different NIPT solutions and work with all major NIPT lab providers for pregnant women to identify risks and plan future steps. Your doctor may suggest further genetic screening and testing to confirm findings or provide more details about your condition.

Non-invasive prenatal screening offers parents a choice in the manner in which genetic testing is conducted. Many of today’s genetic screening and testing procedures like amniocentesis (which collects fluid directly from the uterus) or chorionic villus sampling (snipping off a piece of placental tissue) are naturally intrusive which causes concern and anxiety about the risks associated with them. Not all high risk pregnancies have babies with abnormalities; some pregnant mothers may prefer an initial non-intrusive screening.
